Basic Instructions for Washing Down Comforters
Washing:
- If you have a full-sized washing machine, you can probably wash it at home; larger capacity professional machines make the job easier and safer for your linens.
- Avoid using a machine with agitators, they can be hard on your comforter.
- Use any temperature, but cold wash will reduce the possibility of shrinkage of the covering fabric.
- Use gentle soap without additives or bleaches; this will preserve the beneficial properties of the down, unlike the chemicals of the dry cleaning process.
- Use the fastest spin speed to remove as much water as possible
Drying:
- Use the temperature you prefer, but be aware high temperatures could cause shrinkage.
- Add a couple clean tennis balls to even out and speed drying; they'll sound terrible bouncing around in there, but shouldn't hurt your dryer.
- Be patient! Drying down thoroughly is important, and can take a long time - clumping of the down or odors indicate that drying wasn't complete.
- Line-drying rarely gets down properly dried and distributed, we recommend against it.
